Niche Dominators Book Cover Designs… Your Thoughts?

Posted by Sant Qiu in : News & Updates on July 8, 2009 , trackback

We have been working on a few interesting and exciting projects. One of the exciting projects we are doing is a follow up of our National Bestselling book “Secrets To Dominate Your Niche” we published last year.

When we published Dominate Your Niche, we (my co-author, Thomas Fernandez, and I) were already considering to do our next book. But since we were both busy with our individual businesses we didn’t really put a timeline to it. However, since the release of Dominate Your Niche, we have been getting a lot of rave reviews and positive feedback about it. So we thought the time is right to release a follow up book.

With the new book we wanted to achieve a few objectives. Among them:

On top of that, we also wanted to do our part to encourage entrepreneurship locally and in the region. It’s our way to contribute back to the society. With that in mind, we set out and search for successful entrepreneurs in their niches. We invited them to be featured in our upcoming book. It is a win-win as we get to openly share their success secrets to the readers, while they get to expose their brand to the masses.

We are happy to have received wonderful responses from well-known entrepreneurs and brands. Some of them are over 10 million dollar companies. One is even over 100 million dollar company! We will share more about the companies in a later post.

But here, we would like to ask for your feedback. We have 3 book cover designs that we are considering. We’d like your opinion on them. I won’t explain too much on the reasoning behind the design as on the bookshelves, the general public will react just based on what they see, without prior knowledge of what it is about. So here’s how to judge them:

Imagine you’re in the bookstore and looking at the shelves. Which one grabs your attention and compels you to find out more/even buy it. The most important thing is attention grabbing.

    Cover #1:

    Cover #2:

    Cover #3:

Let me know your choice (the one that GRABS your ATTENTION and makes you want to find out more/buy) by leaving a comment in the comment box below. It would be great if you can include your reasoning and additional thoughts/comments.

Looking forward to hear from you and thanks in advance.

    Hi Sant,

You wanted honest opinion, even brutal, so here goes ;)

I prefer number 1, it kinda reminds me of the Davanci Code, has an edge of mystery over it, but it’s really THE ONE for Niche marketing, go for it!!

Number 2 looks a little too cheesy, more like some midnight fairytale, while number 3 is extremely complicated and messy.

See you soon, please do invite me for your book preview like you did the last time ;)

    Kind Regards,

    Cover 1 defintiely!

Simple yet classic look. Give the feel of a true genuine classic book that is pack with profound wisdom from the legendary guru.

Cover 2 looks like just a textbook use in classroom and cover 3 is simply too complicated.

Wish you success in the next book launch!

    Regards,
    Sheldon

Cover 1 looks simple and old school.
Cover 2 looks normal can’t tell what is it about.
Cover 3 messy and full of shapes but still don’t convey secrets.

    I prefer cover 1.

    @ Ruben, Sheldon & David

Thanks for your comments so far. It’s interesting that Cover 1 is taking the lead for now. In another mini survey I just conducted, another cover actually was the hot favourite ;)

Will let you guys know the results later on. This is really interesting.

    Hi Sant,

Congrats on your upcoming book! Wishing you success in advance :)

    I don’t like Cover 1 + 2, looks very dated..

If I had to choose, I would go for Cover 3 but it can be quite hard to read, too messy..

Definitely cover 1. Looks professional with the sense of old-style mystery, similar to “Think and Grow Rich”, that you will learn something from the book.

The other 2 are too boring or looks like some engineering textbook. What’s with the big circle and small slice? Looks like a pie-chart or radar screen.

    Hi Saint.
Thanks for asking for my opinion.
As an avid reader, I would pick the 1st design. The placement and size of the text are eye catching, sparking interest in the contents.
The third design would be my next choice.
The words are one eye catcher & the geometrical designs are one thing that made me take a second look, expecting some technical message within.

    @ Gene, Stephanie, Edmund, Derek

Thank you for your feedback and frank opinions. They are valuable!

@ Edmund, yep, the circle with the slice is supposed to be a pie chart. It’s playing up the dominate idea. Having a big share of the pie.

All of the design are still in conceptual stage. There will be tweaks when we decide which one to go for.

Thanks for your opinions & time guys!

Hi - well now, if I only have these three to pick from, I’d pick number 1. Not so much visual clutter. However, I’d much prefer something with an old Italian fountain included which would symbolize Old Money, the ability for the techniques to last over the ages, and security.
    All the best.

Hey Sant, can’t wait to read your book…

As for the cover, I will go for cover #1…clean and old school, easy on the eye.

Cover #2 don’t catch my attention while #3 is messy and all over the place.

    All the best… :)

    Hi Sant,

I bought your first book “Secrets To Dominate Your Niche” because of it’s contemporary, exciting and dynamic outlook which prompts me to peek what’s inside! I was on a casual stroll inside a bookstore to while away the time and the cover caught my attention. I did not intend to buy any book that day but I came away with your book.

All the above covers did not show the dynamism that caught my attention that day.

However, given the limited choice, here’s my vote :

Choice 1 - looks mysterious like the cover of “The Secret” or books from the era of Wallace Wattle or Napolean Hill. Compared to the other 2, this looks better.

Choice 2 - looks bland and dull.

Choice 3 - very, very messy! I’ll never pick a book like that on a bookshelf.

Number one gets my vote because the simple design makes the book seem reliable and full of wisdom.

Number two is not very eye-catching (it looks like a textbook), and number three is messy.

I’d prefer something more modern-looking, though.

My choice: Cover 1. However it feels like a fiction book rather than a self-help book. There isn’t any impact factor.

Cover 2: Looks like a statistic textbook

Cover 3: First impression is an encyclopedia.

I knew this book with Cover could sell…

    Hi Nikko,

I like the no. 1 most.

For my preference (teen) , I’ll be likely to buy it more than the two other designs. It appeals to our taste more. Just be sure that it’s color after printing will likely stand out from the other books in it’s shelf.
It’s design looks like as if we could obtain a lot from it. That there are real secrets that we have to discover which could encourage us to buy. I believe this could serve as a leverage/advantage for the book:P

The second design looks more like a book from the 90s. Sorry but that’s what I think :P It looks boring too!

The third one is kind of O.K. Reminds me of inspirational books. Although, it has two many words on it. Still, I like the first one best.

Whatever the final cover may be, again, just make sure that the final design has a striking color! No. 2’s and 3’s colors are pale.

Congrats to Mr. Thomas Fernandez and Sant Qiu!

    Nikko congratulations as well!

Honestly, I don’t think any of the designs would grab my attention. They all look like old books my dad use to buy back in the 80’s. And I don’t think any of the books relay the message of “NICHE Dominating” or Business Success Secrets to be revealed. But of the 3 the 3rd one would grab my attention, because of being cluttered or abundance of pictures. But the book I would flip open to see its contents would probably be the 1st one because of its simple design and the look of serious, honest and no nonsense design.

Loved your first book, I really learned a lot. Good Luck.

Great to know that you benefited from our first book. If you love our first book, I think you will definitely love this coming book. We have even more great stuffs inside… not to mention the full-length case studies ;) they are power-packed

Cover 3 please… But it’s a little too messy… Can you use Cover 3, and make it less wordy?

Cover 1 looks really old… It reminds me of Napoleon Hills book… Cover 2 looks like a science book…

Actually, can you use the same look and feel of the original book, and tweak from there? The original book looks great with a hand grabbing money. Probably do another thing with the hand and money…

    Hi Sant,

    I’m for Cover 3.

While Cover 1 evokes a mystical feel from the color, it looks really plain. As some already mentioned, there are books out there, like The Secret, that look like yours. So, I don’t think it’ll make your book stand out much.

Cover 2 is definitely out ;) Looks like a math textbook.

Cover 3 has lots of tiny interesting, eye-catchy graphics that are likely to capture one’s attention. I like how the tiny graphics are mixed all around the cover randomly. It’s really unique, and adds meaning to the word “SECRET” in your title ;)

    Cheers!

I like Cover 1 better than the rest. It doesn’t look too crowded and it’s not too plain either. I personally think Cover 3 is too ‘busy’ and that Cover 2 looks bland.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments and suggestions. They are definitely useful. It seems that so far Cover #2 sucks ;) It has the least votes.

In our email survey to another group, the favourite is cover #3 ;) It might be because the demographic is quite different. So it’s definitely an interesting exercise to witness 2 different groups responding differently.

We will definitely take all your suggestions into consideration.

By the way, if you’ve read our previous book, Secrets To Dominate You Niche, and like it, I think you will really like this upcoming book as well.

On top of having more great contents, we have full-length case studies from businesses that are doing over $1 million to those which are doing over $10 million to those that are doing over $100 million.

    Yes. Over $100,000,000.

And I personally grill these CEOs. Couple of them almost chocked when I kept asking various questions and not letting up. But after a while, invariably, I broke down their politically-correct, media-friendly answers and get them to reveal the real gems. They shared with me things that they have not shared with any other interviewer before.

In fact, I just came back from interviewing the CEO of a company that is projecting to do $110 million revenue… even in this recession. “Without the recession we will probably be doing 10 - 20% more,” he disclosed.

So the content will definitely be useful for those interested in business. I will share more in later posts.

    Cheers.
